I like May much more than Mae. I also like it as a nickname for Margaret.
I wouldn't assume a certain spelling, but Mae is currently more popular.
May has a better "image" than Mae, but I can't really explain the difference. I think May looks better than Mae as well.
Maisie sounds more like a nickname to me, so I prefer May/Mae as a first name.
