I've never seen the point of Abigail. Abby is highly dislikeable ... perhaps you could resurrect Gail, if you don't mind meteorology?

I really like Abigail and Avigail. I don't mind Abby, but it is a nickname I'd also like to avoid because of how common it is. For that reason, I'd be more inclined to go with Avigail. I know where I live, Abby is pretty unavoidable. I have never met an Abigail who went by Abigail exclusively and you always have the issue of while you don't like Abby, your daughter may decide that she likes it and will use it.

Well, I think most people would want to shorten it to Abby, but you don't have to.

I like Abigail, I prefer it to Avigail and if you wanted to use a nickname for it you could always use Gail instead of Abby.

I'm just the opposite. I think Abby is kind of cute but I really don't like Abigail, it sounds so prim and pompous at the same time. I don't know that Abigail would inevitably end up Abby, but it's definitely a strong possibility.
