I believe (although I could be wrong) that Germans pronounce Emil as "AY-mul" / "EH-mul." So your beloved Emil may not be lost to you afterall. He just moved to a different country. :-)

Now that I think about it, Sofia did tell me once that's how they say it in Croatia (unless I totally made that up... it was a long time ago)!
