[Opinions] Re: favorite "African-American" names
I haven't bothered to look at the list but I have always thought that Ebony was one of the most elegant names out there. I understand that in UK and Australia Ebony is common on white girls, but that is very definitely not the case here in the US; it started being used in the seventies and eighties as a symbol of black pride and for that reason I imagine a white Ebony would be looked at pretty oddly, especially by blacks.
Ebony is now out of fashion but I think it would fit right in with Jade, Ruby, Diamond, etc.

I really like Ebony, it's got a pretty lilting sound and nice imagery. I wish it were perceived as more usable on white folk.

I'm in Canada, which I guess might make a difference although I definitely think Ebony is unpopular here too. I grew up with a white Ebony and I never thought it was weird, and I don't recall anyone I knew making comments or finding it weird. She did, however, say that sometimes people assumed she was black before actually meeting her. I don't really like the name, only because it reminds me of super popular Emily.

In grade school, I knew a sibset with an Ebony and a Mahogany. Mahogany was teased and called "hog", though I always thought Ebony was a pretty name for a dark girl.
