Mara...If it was Marian or Miriam vs Mara it would be a more difficult choice.Marion looks too much like a surname than a given name. I also very strongly associate Marion with marionberries. I associate Marian with Robin Hood's love Maid Marian. Also my nana Marian who was born as Mariana who changed her name to fit in.I prefer Mira to Mara. Slightly prefer the sound and definitely prefer the meaning. Mira is one of my favorite short names.

I prefer Marion. Mara reminds me of nightmare, and is likewise a bit of a spooky name to me.Marian is my preferred spelling, which would honor my great-great-great-grandmother whose first name was Marian.

MaraI had a Mara in my class in 2nd grade and ever since have thought it was very pretty and understated. And underused because I've never met another.I guess the spelling Marion is listed as feminine, but I can't help but think it looks more masculine.

Mara, one of my fave names.

I prefer the look and sound of Mara, however, I don't care for the 'bitter' meaning. Marion is nice although I prefer the look of Marian.

Definitely Marion!Marion has always been a favorite name of mine and I just love it to pieces.I also like Mara, though, but definitely picks Marion here.

It would be Mara if not for the fact that the Mara is an evil spirit causing nightmares in Swedish folklore (hence "nightmare").
I prefer Marian to Marion, though.

Marion, definitely. I like its medieval vibe and overall it's a lovely name. Here in Finland, Mara is used as a nickname for Martti, so it feels more masculine than feminine a name to me. Besides that, Mara reminds me of a word "marakatti", which means "guenon monkey" in Finnish.

Both are good but I'd pick Mara. And I like Marian better than Marion.Mara= simple, feminine, strong but unassuming, works well on any age. Has personality but is more of a blank slate than Marion. Marian= pretty, friendly, very medieval feel (maybe because of the Maid Marian association). More narrow age range. Marion= a lot like Marian but less medieval, less feminine (I've met boys named Marion too and it just looks more unisex because of the o), and a little more badass but also harder.

Ugh, that is a really hard choice.
I think Marion is kind of a power name.
Mara is more stuckup and sexy and mediocre. But I feel somehow more comfortable with Mara, like I'd be more likely to use it. I don't know... maybe not. I had put Marion on my list, but not Mara.
Today I'm going with Mara, but next week I might say Marion.

MaraMara is sleek and cool. Marion is like Miriam --- lace doilies, knitting needles, endless cups of weak tea, and a 9:00 bedtime.

Mara, it has the creepy factor which is better than Marion's kind of boring vibe!

MarionMara has this unappealing sound to it... It also reminds me of the word "mar", which is a bit too violent for my liking. Marion, on the other hand, I actually quite like for some reason. I associate it with Maid Marian from Robin Hood.

My niece's name is Mara but we don't pronounce the first syllable so that it sounds like the word "mar". We pronounce Mara to rhyme with Sarah.
