Well, to start with, I don't expect Margie, Greta or Al to be children at all. They're elderly people, and I swear they were born that way.I like Meg because of your daughter. I didn't like it before, but I'm used to seeing it now and it has grown on me. I like Margo as well, but I picture her as a teen or young adult, and someone who's very social. Meg is more of a easy going and laid back person. I like Alex, Alec and Xander, but they all give me different vibes. Xander is trendy, and his parents just loooooooved that the name started with an X (his siblings are named Skylynn, Ryker etc). I see Alec as quite sophisticated, and I have a hard time picturing it on a small child. I love Alex though. and always has. I think it's a very friendly nickname, while still being very handsome and suitable for a small child as well as an adult.Stick with Meg and Alex, they're great. :)

I've known people with some of these names so that influences me.Margie - softspoken and conventional
Margo - striking and sarcastic
Greta - brat? it sounds sort of weak to me.
Meg - practical, conservativeAlec - it's not very different from Alex.
Alex - just an average guy. maybe sporty
Xander - sorta nerdy, not in a bad way.
Al - I have a hard time picturing this on a kid or young person. Friendly I guess.

Margie: She's a chubby middle aged woman with four kids.
Margo: She's artistic and chic, in her 20's, living in an urban area.
Greta: A blonde little girl who is an ambivert
Meg: She's a quiet and shy teenager with brown hair.
Alec: He's snooty, probably in his 40s-50s. He's an Oenophile.
Alex: He's the boy next door. Blonde, probably on a sports team.
Xander: He's a brat with ADHD.
Al: He's middle aged, with a beer gut, and works a blue collar job.

Margie - I can't imagine a kid... but probably a fat kid thats really bossy.
Margo - Cute girl with auburn hair (don't know why), friendly and smiley
Greta - No nonsense, serious, bookworm.
Meg - Sweet, fun and very loving. I might be a bit biased because your Meg is pretty darn cute and sweet looking! :)
Alec - sweet, some what softer/gentle, well mannered, a really lovely boy
Alex - your 'boy next door'. Fun, friendly, cute, sporty
Xander - a pain in the bum. Naughty, rough and annoying.
Al - Bit similar to Xander, but probably rougher.

Margie: Loud kid with frizzy red hair and glasses. One of those characters a children's author would come up with that encapsulates every quirky stereotype. Wears mismatched socks and carries around a weird pet, like a parrot, or a lizard.Margo: Brown braid, green eyes, quiet, studious. Takes her studies very seriously and wants to get into a good college, even though she is only twelve. Slightly gawky, not without friends, but stand-offish.Greta: German girl with blonde hair and blue eyes. Bright, curious, generic.Meg: Everyday kind of girl who plays soccer and has friends. Maybe not the most popular girl, but well liked. Does well in school. Has an artistic bent and really loves animals.Alec: Kid growing up in the 70's with brown hair and blue eyes. Well behaved, respectful, keeps to himself. Wears god awful 70's clothes and grows up to be an executive of some kind.Alex: Much like Meg, an everyday kind of kid. He likes video games and playing outside and sometimes struggles with shyness. Bushy hair, bright eyes, can be slightly mischievous when influenced by more outgoing kids. Picky eater.Xander: Fantasy geek. Loves playing Magic: The Gathering and competes in tournaments while in his teens. Belongs to several different fandoms and does the LARP thing. Not quiet or shy, doesn't bother him in the least that he is non-conforming. Is friends with a lot of different types kids because of his easygoing nature and his enthusiasm.Al: Kid growing up in the 1930's/1940's, born in Philadelphia. Half Filipino and half German. Handy and hard working. Grows up to own his own construction company and fathers seven children with his wife. I just described my grandpa for that one, because he was Albert/Al. :)
