Where I live, people named Mario are typically of Mediterranean descent, though I've only met one or two at most.
Both Marius and Marinus are quite widely used by speakers of Afrikaans. I like them both, but much prefer Marinus.
Video game character? You mean the plumber brothers? Not really anything I'd associate a living being with.
