Margaret Pearl is ridiculous, but Margaret is a name I've always loved and would have used happily.
In South Africa the default nn for Margaret (when there were enough Margarets for this to make sense) was Margie, with the g as in Gloria, not Gillian. And I dislike that intensely! Maggie is OK, Meg is too close to tired Megan, and Peggy just isn't natural any more. I once knew a Peggy who was just that - Peggy; no mn. And that worked just fine.
I don't know why people seem to prefer Margot and Marguerite to Margaret!
