[Opinions] Griffin
What do you think of the name Griffin? Is the nickname Griff unavoidably? Does it remind you of Gryffindor or the half eagle half lion mythological creature?

I wouldn't give a nickname to a Griffin. I was very into Harry Potter in school and I never made a connection to the classmate with the name. I've heard of Fin being used as a nickname for it.

I have never, ever liked it. It doesn't sound very namey to me at all (even though I've known a few), just harsh and obscure. Griff is probably unavoidable unless there was another very well-established NN. I have never seen or read HP so I think of the mythological creature.

I like it, but it sounds a little too gruff for a young kid. It would be a great middle name though. It makes me think of the mythological creature. I don't think Griff is inevitable, Griffin is already pretty short.
I also like Gryphon because it looks more medieval, but people would probably assume it was Griffin. (I also have a hard time remembering the difference between "Griffin" and "Griffith" because they both just make me think of griffins. There's a street in my city called one of those things and I still don't know which one it is!)

Don't really like the name, I think Griff would be unavoidable

I like Griffin, but it does just make me think of the mythical creature. Because of that I’m not sure if I would ever use it.

Heh, that's the only reason I'd consider using it (or any other mythological name).

It's okay. It feels more like a surname than Phoenix does.I don't know anything about real world griffin mythology; I only know the Tamora Pierce version...humans can't lie in their presence, wearing their feathers helps people see through illusions, using their feathers for arrows improves accuracy, young ones are gold...so I associate them with insight, integrity. Also, the word makes me think of gruff and cliff. It's only 2 syllables. No nickname is inevitable, especially with unusual, easy-to-say, short names.

It reminds me of Griffin McElroy before either of those things. If I had to pick one it definitely reminds me of the mythological creature.I like it well enough. I don't think Griff is necessarily an unavoidable nickname. I've known a handful of Griffins and none of them went by Griff.

I like the name Griffin, it does remind me of the mythological creature but I don't mind that about it. Griff as a nickname seems probable but not inevitable. Despite having grown up reading Harry Potter it really doesn't bring up anything to do with it, not sure why. I'm kind of embarrassed to admit it but for me the strongest association is actually Griffin McElroy who is on a couple podcasts including a comedy "advice" show and one where he and family members record DnD gameplay, but that's probably just since I've been hyperfixating on it recently and I'd figure it's safe to assume that's not commonplace for just anyone hearing the name.

It just makes me think of a gryphon/griffin. It's a nice name and I definitely don't think that Griff is unavoidable.
