[Facts] Could you help with the pronunciations of some Irish and Scottish Gaelic names, please?
I have listened to so many pronunciations on the internet (I tried to get those from Scottish or Irish people) but I'm still not quite sure:Aileen - I heard it pronounced by quite a few Scottish people and it seems to be AY-leen, is this correct? Would the Irish pronunciation be the same?Ailís - because of the í I thought this should be AY-leesh. However, I have listened to countless pronunciations on the internet by Scottish and Irish people and they all very clearly say AY-lish. Does anyone know?Aisling - I listened to quite a few people say it and it sounded like ASH-ling to me, but on this site it says ASH-lyen. However, I definitely heard the G in all of the pronunciations.Aoibheann - how is this pronounced? And does Aoibhinn sound different? What about Aoibhin?Eilidh - is this actually AY-lee (same as Hayley without the H) or does it sound more like EH-lee but with a long EH sound, not a short one? I heard it both ways.

I've only ever heard Eilidh as Ayla.

As an english person, I would pronounce Aileen as Eileen. I’m pretty sure Ailís is AY-lish. I think Aisling has a few pronunciations: Ash-ling, Ashlin, Ashleen and there could be more. According to btn, there isn’t much difference between Aoibheann and Aoibhinn / Aoibhin. Aoibheann is pronounced EE-vAHn (similar to Evan). And Aoibhinn is pronounced EE-vEEn (so not much difference there). Eilidh is probably pronounced AY-lee, but in an irish accent it may sound like EH-lee. I might update this post in a few days so I can ask my nan how she pronounces these and post it on here (she is irish). I was thinking about irish names today too; they are really interesting!

I’m Scottish and I pronounce them like this:Aileen - AY-leen
Ailís - AY-lish
Aisling - ASH-ling
Eilidh - AY-lee (this is the only way I’ve ever heard it pronounced here and I know lots of Eilidhs personally)Sorry, I don’t know about Aoibheann.
