[Opinions] Karen
It is dated, but I like that it works in multiple languages including Japanese and Armenian. Do you think the Karen memes permanently turned this name into a social boogeyman with Kate Gosselin’s haircut? Would a girl named Karen be able to voice dissatisfaction without getting dismissed with an "OK, Karen"?

I love Karen and I find the meme thing incredibly annoying. I hope it dies out soon so the name won’t be tainted by it anymore.

I still think Karen is a cute, simple alternative to Katherine. I hate what the Karen meme is doing to the name.

I think it needs a rest for a while. Wouldn’t it be kind of dated even without the memes?Maybe Karina could work as an alternative?

I don't think there's anything wrong with Karen memes, or with being one of those so called Karens. I like the sound of it, and how soft it is. Everybody should be a Karen, the world doesn't have enough of 'em!

Eh, does it work in Japanese though? The pronunciation between an American and Japanese person saying it would be completely different.

Alas I think not. Not for a while anyway, and those that remember the meme will probably have it stick with them as their primary association with Karen. I'm not fond of the name at all, I think it's terribly dated.

"Not for a while anyway, and those that remember the meme will probably have it stick with them as their primary association with Karen."You are probably right. I know a very nice woman in her 60s named Karen and a now retired librarian in her 80s with the name, which gives me fond feelings toward it. Maybe in 20 years, when all the people who have made the current storm of memes are older and no longer in vogue, the name will be fondly associated with great-grandmas.

Oh yeah I can see it coming back, it is (or was) a pretty popular name and those just don't die that easily. I'm going to throw out a guess that the children of the current generation of toddlers will be the ones to bring it back. The meme would be too far removed by then, and grandparents (those who know the meme well / even partaken in it) will get less influence on the names. It'd probably be seen as "charming" lmaoThe closest comparison is probably Ada. Karen was big between the 1930s and up until the 2010s (I've checked just for funsies, the decline of the name has nothing to do with the meme). Ada, by comparison Was popular from the 1880s up until the 1940s where it declined in popularity for decades until it fell of completely in the 80s. I suspect a similar trend where 20 years or so down the line (probably a little more), like Ada, Karen will suddenly rise to trendy status. It'll be interesting to see what names they'd like by then

I just don't like it, it doesn't sound that nice to me. Like caring or something. I don't mind names like Carrie or Caroline but this one is kinda ugly to me. Karina is nice though.

For right now, it's not a good idea. I suspect the meme effect will wear off after a couple years if not sooner.

Let's just say I don't envy anyone named Karen these days. The memes will hopefully subside with time. It's not like it's a horrible name. Vut I can't imagine taking that on right now.

I was honestly waiting for somebody to make a post about this.I was on the comment thread post for Karen, the other day. And to be honest, the name Karen is pretty much like Isis, or Katrina now. I never really liked Karen like that before, but it wasn’t a completely bad name. I honestly feel bad for anybody who has the name Karen nowadays. It’s honestly pretty sad. Memes usually die off anyways, but I don’t see this dying off anytime soon to be honest.

"I honestly feel bad for anybody who has the name Karen nowadays."Same here. Somebody mentioned that Karen memes seem like the modern equivalent of shouting "Witch!" in the 17th century to shut middle aged women up. It is a weird attack on creditability rather than on whatever is being discussed. "Memes usually die off anyways, but I don’t see this dying off anytime soon to be honest."
Has Betty fallen out of meme use? If so, there may be hope for Karen.
