It's usually spelled Athénaïs with two accents. It's the French version of Athena. A mistress of King Louis XIV had this name. I think it's hauntingly beautiful.

Athénaïs is not the French version of Athena. The French forms of Athena are Athéna and Athéné. Athinais is a transliteration of the Greek name Αθηναΐς. The name is derived from Athena but is not Athena. Athénaïs is the French form of Αθηναΐς.

The family were Greek so I wonder if that accounts for the difference in spelling.

Yes, Athinais is the modern Greek form.

Of what? Not of Athena. The modern form of Athena is Αθηνά, often transliterated as Athina.
