I liked Story's idea to do a different surname system, so I did one, too! This system uses double surnames, one matriname from one's mother and one patriname from one's father. A person's double surname remains unchanged during their life and siblings of the same parents have the same double surnames. Same-gender couples will typically pass the name of their same-gender parent similar to different-gender couples, deciding on which order they will go in, and their children often pass the first of these names as a matriname and the second as a patriname, regardless of the gender of the parents involved. Any couple may decide to pass their surnames differently if they so choose. Most families find consistency of surnames among siblings more important than which specific names have been passed, so if a person has children with more than one partner, they pass the same surname to all children, regardless of the gender of their partners.
