It reminds me of Alta and a guy I know called Arda. It seems both unique and plain. I don't have strong feelings about it.
I think it was a feminization of Art, which is an old-fashioned sounding nickname for Arthur. Art was on the masculine list, and Artie was on both lists. Ardelia was also on the list, and an alternate spelling of that was Artelia, so maybe that could connect to some usages.
edited to add: I think Artem, Artemas, Artemis, Artemisia, Artema were used in the US back then though were rare.
