Merle is unisex and hideous on both. Meryl would be considered the same if it weren't for Meryl Streep (whose given name, Mary Louise, is so much prettier). Merlee sounds like an unpleasant nickname forced on a child based on a mispronunciation when they were five.
Also, naming someone after a character on Super Paper Mario (what is that?) feels weird. Though I'm not someone who plays video games so I don't speak from authority.
