I wouldn't say popularity, we're talking infinitesimally small numbers here.
That said, I do quite like Mahalia - Mahalia Jackson is one of the great vocalists. I don't know about Mahala, it sounds incomplete. I think that extra syllable on Mahalia looks and sounds better.
