Fiona
Do you like/hate it?Because it is an uncommon name where I live, everyone thinks of the only Fiona they've ever heard of: from Shrek. Would that reference deter you from using the name?

This is my daughter's name. I forgot about Shrek when I used it. I don't think the association is bad so I don't worry about it now. Had I remembered the association when I named my daughter I may have reconsidered. But as more and more movies and books come out, more names get used on characters, and it seem pointless to try to avoid a name just because of an association, because then the only names left would be the ones that are so commonly used that they are generic. More than the association, I am also somewhat disappointed that the name is not as unusual as I thought. I actually fear it is getting trendy. But I still like the name.

Used to hate it but now I really like it. Sounds like the name of a spunky, funny girl with lots of personality. I don't really think about Shrek, though I have a young cousin who's nn is Fiona due to the movie. :)

I'm going to be different and say I intensely dislike it.It is so unbelievably dated where I live, to the point where you can't go anywhere without running into a thirty-something Fiona. Plus I think it's really board trendy. Plus I don't think it's an altogether very attractive sound. Finola or Fenella I like though.I don't think I would let something as silly as Shrek bother me, if I really liked a name.

I love the name Fiona and have since elementary school (this was before Shrek came out). As for the Shrek connection now, it wouldn't stop me from using the name but I wouldn't because I have a character in a book I'm writing with the name Fiona.

I don't hate it, but I have tried to like it more but I just can't. I think it might be because there was a girl in my highschool named Fiona who wasn't very nice and I always think of her when I hear it, but I have known other Fionas including a little 5 year old girl from Ireland who had curley hair and my Aunty's name is Fiona too.

I love Fiona. In fact, it's my cat's name. Shrek came out less then a year after we got her, so people often ask if she was named after that Fiona, but we did, in fact, name her before that. I don't think the association is strong enough that it should keep you from using it. Nor is it a bad association, really. It's not like the unfortunate "ugly sea witch" connection that Ursula has.

I think it's a very pretty name. I have positive associations with it; Fiona from "Shrek" and the British actress Fiona Shaw. If I were you, I wouldn't care about the associations: I would not at all call an association with "Shrek" negative. Fiona is a beautiful and kind character, is she not? Now, if you named your child after a villain from a well-known film (Sauron, for example), that would be an other matter entirely. But as long as there are positive associations, I certainly wouldn't hesitate to use the name. It wouldn't be a burden to your child, believe me. :)

I love it! The Shrek association, would not deter me from using it.

It actually makes me think of the musical Brigadoon rather than Shrek, which is a lovely reference, so no worries. I hated this name when I first heard it (as a kid when I first saw the musical) but it's grown on me since, even though I've never actually met anyone with the name.

I love it. It is the epitomy of simple and sweet in my opinion. I know a few myself (two girls from school and two of my friends' mothers) and find that it suits anyone, no matteer what age they are which is a big plus IMO. Lovely name - I wouldn't worry about Shrek though. In a few years it'll all be forgotten anyway and people will just notice a pretty and unusual name (that is still entirely spellable and recognisable!)

Fiona's very nice - pretty & delicate. (Just please don't use the nn Fee.) I didn't make the Shrek connection until you mentioned it, so I wouldn't let it affect your decision.

I dislike it for a number of reasons, but mainly because it was extremely popular in the 80's here, so sounds really dated. I had two in my class of around 25 students alone. The Shrek reference wouldn't put me off using it though if it is uncommon where you live and if you love it enough.

I like it a lot. I think it's very pretty and I don't automatically think of Shrek personally. My first thought is actually Julia Roberts. Her mn is Fiona and she's one of my fave actresses :)

Fiona is beautiful. I prefer Finola, but Fiona is more accessible to most and would suit your dd perfectly. I wouldn't worry about the Shrek thing. I like it when movies / books revive great names.Have you considered mns for Fiona?

I don't think the Fiona reference would deter me from using it.I don't like Fiona for a variety of reasons. It's very common where I live among the early 3os age group. I once worked in a job with a girl called Fiona and three guys - all the guys had a gf called Fiona.

I like it. I was considering it but...my brother name his cat Fiona so it's off my list now :-/ But it is lovely really!

I don't like it because I think it sounds snotty. But if you use it, I don't think the Shrek reference would be a big deal.

I don't like it at all, I don't find the sound of it attractive. Shrek wouldn't stop me from using it if I loved it though, that's connection will be far less by the time the child goes to school etc. It was also not my first thought right now when I saw Fiona.

I love Fiona. It's uncommon where I live too (the US), but it doesn't make me think of Fiona from Shrek. Even if it did, I don't think that's a very bad reference. It mostly makes me think of Fiona from The Secret of Roan Inish, which is what makes me like it so much.
