Wietske
I'm really starting the fall in love with Wietske. I'm quite particular when it comes to Dutch names -- all too often I find a name in which I like the spelling, but not the pronunciation, or vice versa. But I adore the look and sound of Wietske. It's sweet, spirited, and painted with royal hues of blue and purple. Blithe and breezy, but not insubstantial, frivolous, or flimsy.Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find the meaning of the name (I discovered the name through Dutch actress Wietske van Tongeren). Thoughts or opinions?

According to a Dutch namesite, Wietske is a diminutive for old Germanic names Wig (struggle) Widu (forest, woodland) or Widha (wide, far). Can't confirm any of that! - but I do like the sound of it.

My book on old Frisian names confirms this (and lists Witske, Wytske, Wietje, Wieta and Wiete as variants).

Thanks. That makes sense since Dutch names ending in -ke are often diminutives. I'll look into this!
