Vashti
What do you think of Vashti? I was always told in Hebrew school that it is pronounced VAHSH-tee, but as it's of Persian origin, I'm not sure, as I'm unfamiliar with the language. I'm starting to like the name, though. Thoughts?

I don't really like neither the sound of it nor the association.

I've loved this name since I read 'the machine stops' have you read the story? :0)

It's a nice name. I don't have any strong feelings about it one way or another, but it's exotic and pretty.

I should dislike Vashti, it's not my normal flavour of name - but I really dig it! I would never use it, but I think it's really cool, interesting, cool sounding and just head-turning. I would totally use it for a character, even if I'd never use it in real life. It just stands out. Thumbs up.

My dad bought me a CD with Vashti Bunyan a few years ago and then I started to like the name Vashti. I think it's just the kind of female name I tend to like: A bit quirky, rare, definitely not sugar-sweet but not sounding like a boys' name either. Before I discovered Vashti Bunyan, I had only seen the name once, when reading about the Jewish Purim feast. Apparently, Vashti in the Bible is Vasti in Swedish, but it's a very rare name, bourne by only about 200 women in Sweden.

I hadn't known that it was considered Hebrew or that it was in the Bible. It looks and sounds Persian to me. I think it's okay. Seems as foreign to me as any other Persian, Iranian, or South Asian name, which isn't such a bad thing - but I guess that is a "wrong" impression if it's supposed to be Biblical.

It's kind of neat, but it also has kind of a scary, harsh sound to it. "I am Vashti, the evil princess!"

I used to know a Vashti (not pronounced your Hebrew school way) and know of one other. Both are Australians but whether there's a family connection between them I've no idea. They are of different generations. The choice shows a certain amount of verve but I'd never use it - too "out there" for my taste (and although I love Verity Vashti seems a tad too harsh). But I wouldn't look askance at someone else's little Vashti.
Cute!
