Lola
What do you think of Lola? I thought it was going to be the new trendy celeb baby name, but it has gone down in popularity somewhat. I dislike the meaning so I wouldn't use it but I really like the sound. And what do you think of the similar sounding Pola?

Lola in tagalog means "Grandma." I'm a white American, but am married to an Asian man and that is what we will be calling my mom once the baby arrives.

No.I said it once, I said it again, Lola isn't pretty - apart from on pets, and then it's sweet. On people, it makes me sad, and the more I see it the more I want to slam my head into a wall.Pola is soooooo ugly looking and if it's said 'poh-lah'... jeeebs, I have nothing nice to say! I mean, properly horrific, utterly horrible. It makes me think of 'pox', 'polio' and so forth. What about Paola? It's a little prettier in look and sound.

To me it just sounds like childish gibberish. I feel the same about Oona. Pola is less childish-sounding, but also less name-ish-sounding.

I think Lola sounds very childish, like a nickname a young child would have.

It sounds like a nickname and I usually don't like nicknames.

I think Lola sounds immature. It might be suitable for a little girl, but I'd find it hard to take grown woman with this name seriously.Pola makes me think of polar bears. Paula would be better or Appolonia "Pola", but not just Pola.

I don't like it at all. I think it sounds cheap and it also reminds me of the song by The Kinks. I don't like Pola either, sorry. It just makes me think of polar bears!

lo lo lo lo lo --- laaa I think it's awful. Pola is alright. Because it's unfamiliar, it immediately makes me think of the word pole, and of Poland. But I could get used to it quickly - it's very namey and has a nice bright simple sound.

I just wish this name would not get brought up on here anymore. It seems to get asked about every month or more and the result is a long thread of people expressing strong hatred for the name and how it is the most horrible trashy name ever. That being said, I disagree. I really like Lola, it was my great grandma's name and my cousin's name. Pola is alright but Apolonia or Paula is better.

It's not the most horrible trashy name ever. It's just ruined by associations, IMO, and not a good name to use - like Cherry or Dick.
