I like the jewel and its color, but the word amethyst is so lispy and doesn't slide off the tongue easily. I much prefer Opal, Ruby or even Diamond to Amethyst.
Oh well, she's nine and by next year she'll probably have thought of something else.

I like Opal, though I'm always pronouncing it "Opul", which would be annoying to a person having the name. Diamond is a good name, very rarely used, I think.
Topaz! That's pretty. I wouldn't call a daughter of mine that, as our last name is 4 syllables and all vowells, and thus needs a plain-ish name.Which our 3 kids got.

I once knew a male Diamond. He was a college classmate and friend of my husband's. I still remember his surname, and it was ethnic, but I can't determine which country it came from. Anyway, figuring his parents were immigrants or the children of immigrants, which is more common in NYC, where my husband attended college, than in other parts of the country, and that perhaps Diamond was a not unusual male name where they originated.
