Re: Todays name list... for girls
in reply to a message by Joiya
Indah - It looks too much (to me) like it wants to be India (a GP of mine) without being the name of an actual country.Blossom - Absolutely not! That is all.Delora - I find this mildly better than Dolores, though not as pleasant as the simpler Laura.Petunia - See my comment for "Blossom."Faye - Very pretty and understated, and it suits both girls and women.Hazel - Retro-cool and rather hipster-y, but not a name I'd likely use in real life.Meadow - A real GP of mine; I like the combo Meadow Imogen.Harmony - It's not objectionable, but I've never liked the sound (somewhat ironic, given the definition of the name).Sommer vs. Summer - Summer, absolutely; though it's still a bit of a "hippie" name to me.Lorraine - I *should* like this name, since I tend to like names that start with 'L' and end with 'n', but I've always found Lorraine to be very harsh. I actually find Lorena (pronounced the Spanish way) much more pleasing.Belphoebe - I think this name is a little too ostentatious to be used in real life. Phoebe is pleasant enough (though I find the repeated 'ee' sounds too child-like to picture on a grown woman).Naomi - I love Naomi, I really do. It's an Old Testament name that didn't become overused after the Protestant Reformation, yet it's still recognizable enough that it wouldn't be deemed too "exotic" on a little girl today. I also admire the writer Naomi Wolf, so there's that.Jade - I know a lot of people who don't like this name, but I do. A lot. It's probably my favorite gem name.Merit vs. Marit - Merit seems more like a full name to me (in this case, a virtue name), and Marit a nickname. (I once knew a Marit whose real name was Meredith - honestly, I prefer her full name to the nickname.) I wouldn't use either one, though.Patience - The only virtue name I would use in real life. I like both the sound and the sentiment behind the name. I definitely would want my daughter to have the patience that I regrettably lack. :-)Pleasance - See my comment for "Harmony." Except this one sounds less like a person's real name.Bree - I like it as a nickname, but not as a full name (otherwise it reminds me of cheese).Emerald - Though I prefer Jade (both the name and the actual stone), I still like Emerald. I've never met one in real life, though I would love to.Leda - It's a short, simple, sophisticated name that I could see myself using for a character, though probably not in real life.Valiant (b) - It puts a lot of expectation on the kid, but it does give you the nickname Val. :-)
Please rate my personal short name lists (the latter includes combos):
