It's legal to use one middle name (and two last names, btw), but almost no one uses them. It's actually seen as a bit pretentious to use middle name and when used they are always regarded as double first names and must always be included in all paperwork and forms (for school, work, etc.) and it is assumed that people are called by both names.
*there are rare exceptions for names that are compounds (like Ana Marija/ Ana-Marija/ Anamarija) and used commonly (mostly it's saints' names)

Now I'm curious.... Do you have kids? If so, did you use middle names?

Yes, I want kids and no, they're not going to have middle names.
I do however plan to use Ana-Sofia as a double name (both name will be used all the time). I would also consider using Marija Magdalena as a double name, but since I like Magdalena much more I'll probably just use it as a first name.
And just to mention it, no one in my family has a middle name and no one I went to school had a middle name (apart from the before-mentioned Ana Marija). They seem to have become more popular since the 1990s, but I still only know 3 people with middle names in my day-to-day life (and they all use them as double barreled names, just as if they have a hyphen).
ETA: I haven't given this much though, so haven't researched it, but I think it's a Slavic thing. Most of us don't use middle names in the way they're used in English (patronymics don't count, since you don't get to choose those, so it's more like having two last names).
