Re: Inspired by Billina's thread...
Eugh.
I want to love Lyra. I reaaalllly, reaaaally want to like it. I spent ages telling myself I did, but the truth is... I just don't get along with it. I try to force myself to like it, but when I really think about it I don't.I think it's the connections. It has such a pretty background and meaning and it looks beautiful on paper. When you say it aloud, it just sounds so wishy-washy and lame. It feels like it should be this pretty, powerful name but it's just... a bit of a limp-handshake of a name. Maybe it's doomed by association but it just doesn't have the personality and spark it's set up to have, if that makes sense.I mean, it just scrapes into OK territory for me. Plus, I don't like the lye/lie sound at the beginning, but I kinda like Lysander so, erm, I dunno... I guess Lysander's a bit wimpy too. It's just wimpy. And despite a rich heritage it feels so nothing-y (Lyra, not so much Lysander)I mean, there are so many more four-letter L names with presence and personality - Lisa, Leah, Lara, Lena, Lina, Leda, Lila, Leto, Lumi... I can't say I like them all or that they're great names, but they have so much more flavour and presence than Lyra, which somehow seems so interesting and turns out so disappointing and boring. The only thing I can say about it is that it's slightly less boring and annoying than Luna.

Yes. I completely agree it's one of those names that you have to tell yourself that you like because everyone else does. 'Limp handshake' is perfect - I don't even think it looks that nice on paper.Actually my main association would have to be the pencil brand.I feel Lyra is becoming the new Luna - which has a more attractive sound anyway - in that the parents want something fantasy-like and unique but can't really think of anything beyond that. And for what it's worth I happen to also really dislike Lumi. There's no pleasing me, ha.
