Yes - it is here in the UK too. Should have been clearer, I was talking about the origins of those names and why they were not essentially the same name

In a lot of the US they are pronounced identically and therefore used interchangeably. I pronounce them differently because I'm Australian but I have a colleague named Tanja and one named Tonya and the Americans say them identically so we have nicknames for both to differentiate.
