I'm not very fond of place names, although there are some pretty ones, like Ravenna, Valencia, Siena, Vienne, etc. I don't think you necessarily need to have a connection to the place, but personally I prefer it.
Usable and not usable? Well, some just don't sound like names and some have bad associations. Although Odessa may sound cute, it was the place of horrible pogroms, for example.
