Re: Name Sighting
Isn't the whole point of this website to discuss the names we encounter/notice/think about, with people who spend an above average time thinking/discussing/noticing names?"I contradict myself? Very well, I contradict myself. I am large. I contain multitudes." - Walt Whitman.

Is everyone agreeing about how just horribly bad a name is a discussion now? There are some name sites that don't alllow that. They manage just fine. Why would the parent pick the name? Want to discuss that? Of course not, you want to pay yourselves on the back for having so much better taste than those plebes who don't post here. If only Sir-Real's mom had popped in, you all could have convinced her to name him August instead! (Or, more likely, ignored her thread while you swooned over August in another thread, because, really, threads where people ask for opinions on names that don't already have the BTN Stamp of Approval or aren't just SO BAD don't tend to do well. Even names that would otherwise be considered Good by board standards don't garner many comments if it's not something people here already know and like).Don't worry; I'm not going to post on Ops anymore. You can circlejerk about how great your taste is to your hearts content.

This seems like an overreaction. This site has always had a certain culture to it, for lack of a better word. You're only now objecting to it? You can't demand people react a certain way to names. Should we have more nuanced discussions of names? Probably. That'd be neat, but I don't really think that's what Ops was intended to be, and I'm not surprised it's not like that now. It's always just been a fun place to share short opinions of names, even if those opinions end up being nothing more than "meh" or "I love it."

I will say that I’ll miss your posts on ops. I love how analytical you are, and how good you are at calling out bullshit.

I doubt you won’t return. People always say that as a sort of “fine, I’ll just take my toys elsewhere” sort of childish remark and they rarely stick to it. Being here over 10 years, 1 person out of many has actually left for good. YOU are the one who has placed a moral ideology on the OP name. No one else did. No one even stated whether Sir-Real was a person of color. I’ve known people of color (not just black) with the name but I’ve also known a couple of white kids with Sir in their name. Demographics aren’t how they used to be where YOU can assume the race, or for that matter the gender, of a name. What race is Sir Marcus, Sir James, or Sir Travious in your mind? You obviously feel it’s the name of a person of color. All 3 of those are white kids I’ve met. Get over your holier than thou attitude, which you are surprisingly saying is what we are doing by commenting on a name that has no race mentioned anywhere. That’s what we do on the OPS board; we comment on names. You’re the only one injecting race.
