Re: interesting names from novel
in reply to a message by irene
Hi foxgloves !!!Here there are some great hidden gems!Mehriban and Iraj are beautiful Persian names, especially Mehriban! Was Mary-Belle popular among African Americans in the past? I prefer Just Belle / Bell.Timbo! Stunning!
I really like Étienne and this Romani form is simple and fascinating.

ghgghf i did NOT expect Timbo to be called stunning...it made me double take when i first read it (though it is a cute nick name). which name is related to Etienne, though- not Timbo?also, i should've said in the original post- Mary-Belle's name has a tragic origin. she's a former slave, and was renamed that by her previous slaveholder, presumably because he thought Mehriban was too foreign. there's no explanation as to why she kept it for decades afterwards, but i'm guessing it's because Mary-Belle was what so many knew her as, and/or her old name reminded her more of those painful memories than her new one. also idk if it was a common African American name, but it does sound like it'd have been a common Southern name.
