Halcyon
Tell me what you think of Halcyon. If you dislike it, is it because it seems weird or too wordy and/or because the sound is unappealing? Or, do you have a specific negative association with it?To me, it's an unusual word name + a bird + a myth/astrology reference + a connection to Hallie.

Hi !!!I much prefer Alcyone! Infact I totally miss the link with both birds and the adjective. We use the adjective 'ameno' (amoenus).

I like it - and my likeness magnifies - exponentially - with Hallie as a nickname. The association I have is from TS Eliot's Dry Salvages (from Four Quartets) -and this association is not negative; nor does imply that this name should not be used. Again I really love the nickname you suggested. "...And the ragged rock in the restless waters,
Waves wash over it, fogs conceal it;
On a halcyon day it is merely a monument,
In navigable weather it is always a seamark
To lay a course by: but in the sombre season
Or the sudden fury, is what it always was..."

While I prefer Alcyone, I've been thinking a lot about Halcyon lately. I'm allured by its sleek timelessness, and, as you noted, I love that it encompasses birds and mythology and doubles as an elegant adjective.

I liked Alcyone / Alkyone more at first, but lately I've been preferring Halcyon. Do you pronounce Alcyone with a S or a K sound?

I pronounce Alcyone with a "S" sound and Alkyone with a "K" sound; I prefer the former, though it's unfaithful to the original Greek.

It's not my style personally, but I do find it interesting. I love when names come from mythology, and the bird association is a bonus. I'd like to see others with the name.

Halcyon is definitely a GP of mine. I love the sound of it, the meaning, and the nn Hallie. It does bother me that it's so similar to the medicine Halcion. Also, it doesn't complement the names of my other children at all. Still, I'd love to meet someone with this name.

I think it has a very pretty sound and feels very wearable. I liked it more a few years ago and have sort of gone off it. It's a name that I wouldn't use because it somehow doesn't feel right for me, but I'd be pleased to see it on someone else's kid.

I like it mostly.The little part of dislike is due to the name simply sounding a little made up. Otherwise - It sounds pretty. I could certainly see a sweet, even-tempered, adventurous person wearing this name. It has an air of freedom and escapism due to its connection to the celestial and bird reference. It has a calming effect.
