Never known a real Gilbert and I've only known one fictional one. Gilbert Goodmate and the Mushroom of Phungoria is a game I grew up with and while I'd never use Gilbert on a baby, it's left me fond of the name for writing, a pet or use on a sim.
I prefer the nickname Bertie (or Bert) to Gil, or even Gilby I think - just not a fan of Gil.
