Horse names
Last week was the Kentucky Derby. The thoroughbred horses in the race are known for their unique names. Which is your favorite from the race? What would you name a racing horse if you had one to enter into the Derby? I think I would chose the name Paradigm Shift, Fortune’s Favor, or Cobradiezmos.

A friend of mine, long ago, and his friend and co-owner had to find a name for their horse in order to enter it in its first and only race, which it duly won. Nothing seemed to work, but while bickering they noticed a rock album and gave the horse its name. I can't remember the band, let alone the album, but if I had to name a horse I'd go Sticky Fingers or Let It Bleed.
Have you ever looked up breeding databases for sport horses on All Breed Pedigree? It's like a horse genealogy site. It's really fun stuff. I like how you can sometimes trace some part of a horse's name back to a famous or foundation sire.
I love racehorse names. I was a horse girl growing up, so I used to make lists of names that I would give a horse. I also loved that a horse could have two names - an official name, and a "barn name". I do remember thinking that it would be amazing to call a white horse "Iceberg" LOL.
East Avenue is classy, I like that one. Luxor Cafe is nice. And I'm drawn to Publisher.

I'd name mine Dialectical Materialist.
I picked Journalism for the winning horse.
My dad and I would usually joke about how the last-place horse would go to the glue factory, so I'd totally name a horse "Glue Factory" to see how people would react. XD

Final Gambit is strong, and reminds me about Gambit from X-Men. Sandman, Owen Almighty and Baeza are lovely.
From the list: I'm kind of taken by Flying Mohawk and Coal Battle, they look really interesting to me. Personally, I haven't really thought much about naming a horse, I've never been a horse girl, but off the top of my head I would probably choose Duke of Kings.
Nothing, however, will ever top the one horse from that infamous video, Hoof Hearted (say it out loud). Never fails to crack me up still. It's perfection.

I've been looking into horse names recently (my five year old son is obsessed), so I love to see this list. My favourites are Burnham Square and Sandman.
I don't know much about race horses and their names, since I've been mostly looking into war horses/military horses. But for a race horse, I think I like Abraxas or Churchill.

My favourite from the list is Sovereignty, although Sandman and Final Gambit are cool too. Luxor Cafe is interesting. Where does Cobradiezmos come from?
I recently saw a horse named Burnin' Sage and thought that was awesome.
When I was a kid I used to have notebooks full of horse names and now I can't think of something that would fit perfectly. If I do think of something, I'll come back and edit it in.
