It might just be they thought it looks and sounds cool - likely, because of the X. But it also reminds me of Tzion (Zion), which in Hebrew (according to forvo.com) sort of rhymes with neon, like I imagine Xeon does. So maybe it's a form of Zion that makes people more likely to pronounce it zee-on instead of zie-on. ??
