Nebuch-adnezzar
Hi allWhat does mean the name of the Babylonian King Nebuch-adnezzar (english)?Portuguese equivalent: Nabucodonozor
In Portuguese it's also common to find Donozor alone.Once someone has told me something about "adnezzar" meaning "a-de-nezzar" = "from Nezzar".
Any ideas?TIA

His name means "Nebu [Babylonian deity], protect my crown!" or "Nebu has protected my inheritance". Some others claim it means "Nebu, protect my offspring/son!", "morning star" (which I doubt), "belonging to Nebu", "Nebu's conqueror", "protector of your own border", "Nebu, defend the boundary!", "Nebu, royal prince of Assyria", "Nebu, protect the king!", "Nebu is your protection against all misfortune" or "tears and groans of judgment".Like many Biblical names, it is possible that it has several meanings, with different hidden meanings and all.

But the Verdi opera is about him, and it's Nabucco. Is that the standard usage in Italian, or was it just Verdi providing a more musical, singable version of the name?
