Does anyone know where the male name "Wowa" originates from? I'm guessing it is of Russian descent and might be a nickname of Vladimir - can anyone confirm this?

I believe you're right. I found Vovotchka as a pet form for Vladimir.

I once read about the many sons of King George III, one of whom was in the royal Navy and while serving in the South Seas had a scandalous and long-standing affair with a local lady improbably named Wowski. Could the Russian navy have got there first? (I always fancied Wowski as a name for a cat, preferably a Russian Blue.)

Vova (or as you wrote Wowa)
Volodya
Vovochka
Vlad (rare)
Vovka (a little familiar!)
Vovan (for friends)
Volod'ka
Vovanchik
Vovkin (ironic {actualy this word means Vova's })
and many other nicknames depends on Vladimir's friends
