Meaning and origin of the first name Dumas?
Hi all,My brother Shawn and his wife Danielle had a baby boy just 3 months ago. They named their little boy:Dumas Elijah QuirkeEver since Dumas' birth, I've been wondering about the meaning and origin of his name. I asked Shawn and Danielle about it, but they said they had just heard it somewhere and loved the name.I myself only know Dumas as a French surname, namely of the writer Alexander Dumas (he wrote "The Three Musketeers"). Maybe there's a connection? If so, then what does Dumas mean? I think it's a combination of two words, just like many other French surnames have, like Dupont, Lenoir, Leblanc, etc.Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance.Tristan Seth Quirke

I'm only in French I, but...I'll try. "Du" is a combination of "de le", which means "of the". "Mas" (I think) means "farmhouse" or "barn"--I'm not positive, though--, so his name would mean "of the farmhouse". Poor kid.Array
