Girls name..
I was named Sonora after my Grandmother she was English and was born in North Dakota (Oberon) in the early 1800's. Have never heard of this name other then hers, mine and now a grandaughter. Does anyone know the orgin to this name or ever heard of it before. I know its spanish, but don't know what it means.

The word sonora means "sound full”. It is not a common name in any Spanish speaking community I know.Hope this helps,

I think Sonora is Latin. Anyway, it means "sonority, with a beautiful tune"

There is a town in California named "Sonora" in the Sierra mountains (an old gold mining area). You might consider looking into the town and seeing where the town name came from. If I had to guess, I would say it could be Native American in origin.
