so-FY-a - what is the origin and spelling of this name?
I heard this name pronounced so-FY-a, it is the name of a Jewish lady from Germany, what is the name? I thought it was the german version of sofia but that is pronounced so-fee-a. Help me please?

So-FY-a was the standard pronunciation of Sophia in England before the 19th century. After this time a latin influence (i.e. Spanish, Italian etc) led to it being pronounced so-FEE-a. The same goes for Maria (which was originally ma-RY-a).
I'm guessing the case was similar in Germany.

so-FY-a is the pronunciation of Sophia/Sofia in parts of England and Europe. My great-great-grandmother was Maria pronounced ma-ry-a and she was from Cornwall. Also the song Sophia by Nerina Pallot pronounces it as so-fy-a
