How to pronounce the name "Vera"
Hello:
I want to know how to pronounce the name "Vera" in English?
Is it pronounced like /'vee-ra/ ("ee" like bee)?
Or is it like /'via-ra/( "ia" like ear)?
Or something else?
Can anybody tell me the correct answer? Thanks:)

In England its pronounced VEER-ah with the emphasis on the first part. The VEER rhymes with steer or dear or beer, and the 'ah' is a short vowel sound like in 'at'.hope this was helpful :)

In the Netherlands the E is like in EA in ear, the R is rolling, the A is AH, so it's like VI-rhah

In the US midwest I have only heard the pronunciation VEER-ah (VEER rhymes with "ear").

I think in the UK it is pronounced "VEER ah" but here in the US it is "VER ah" (like "very"). "VER ah" is closer to the Russian pronunciation.

dittoI work with a Vera and that's how she says it. There was also a character named Vera on the television series "Cheers" and that's how it was pronounced on the show as well.ETA: If you click on Vera it lists multiple acceptable pronunciations for it.

Not in the US.

Take it close to "very" as in "very much".The final -a sounds as in other names ending in -ra.

Vera rhymes with Sarah.

That depends entirely on how you pronounce Sarah! I say the Sar- to rhyme with hair, and then an a on the end. And Ver- to rhyme with beer, ear, etc.How do you pronounce Sarah?

The same way you do. I'm sure it depends on where you're from. I've never heard Vera pronounced VEER-a before though.
