I think it means "Clear Light" in Welsh. I found some info on a hotel in Australia called "Claerwen". Here is the info it gave:"Claerwen Retreat was named after the sun and moonlight reflecting off the ocean, from a Welsh word meaning 'clear light'. It is spectacularly located high above the world at the end of a small winding road on a plateau of hills overlooking the ocean at Apollo Bay on the southwest coast of Victoria. It is the highest point in the area, an old aboriginal sacred site with stunning ocean views."Beautiful name! I hope this helps!!!

Woah, that's my name! I never knew there was someone else! I'm not for sure what it means, but the "wen" comes from the Welsh word "gwen", which means white or fair. Lots of Welsh names use that. There is a Welsh river called Claerwen.

It's a different IP address, but same username...Huh. Anyway, Welshdecemberist, you should only post under one posting name. Says so in the rules.

Ummmm...Didn't you just post under the posting name of "Ophelia"? And you claimed you'd never even heard of this name? Now your saying that Claerwen is your name??!

If it's your name, then why hasn't your cousin heard of it? Does your cousin not know who you are...? And if that is the explanation, then how could she have possibly be on this site without knowing your name. Ok, it's possible, but extremely unlikely, especially considering this is a naming site, she'd probably know who you are/know what your name is. o.o

Wow, I've never heard that name before. It's beautiful! I study Welsh language, history, and culture, and it's definitely from Wales. I have a baby on the way, I might even have to consider naming her that! It's gorgeous!

Out of curiosity...How would Claerwen be pronounced? Like Clare and when?

So far, we don't know for sure if it's even Welsh ... since Clive James himself is Australian, he could have found it there, if there really is a hotel by that name!
