meaning of Galileo?
What is the meaning and/or origin of the name Galileo? Yes, of course, I know he was an astronomer and all that, but I was wondering what he was named after and if this name is still used anywhere as a first name (it's not in the list of Italian names). Thanks!

Ethimology of Galileo + another question for the expertsGALILEO Il nome deriva dall'ebraico Galil e significa "circondario, regione". L'onomastico si festeggia il 1° novembre essendo un nome adespot.
From http://www.rulla.com/origine_dei_nomi_G.htmForm the Hebrew "Galil" which means "neighbour" or "from a region"
This name's day is Nobember 1.Is the equivalente, en English to Galileo, Galilee or is this just another Hebrew name that sounds similar?Hope this helps,
Magia.

Hi!
The original meaning of the Hebrew word "galil" (or glila) is "circle", the root being "GLL" (to roll).Andreas Brosch
