Re: Question about the name Tanvi?
in reply to a message by Egyptian Princess
Tanvi occurs in The Penguin Book of Hindu Names by Maneka Gandhi, where it is said to be from a Sanskrit word meaning "slender, beautiful, delicate, fine."

Yes, indeed. The word is a feminine form of tanu which can mean both thin, tenuous, etc. or body, self, life, etc. The root is cognate with English thin and ultimately derives from an Indo-european root which means to spread (the adjective itself has a good Indoeuropean reconstruction). The feminine form usually means thin and beautiful in Sanskrit.
Its use as a woman's name is seen in classical Sanskrit literature already.
