Where did your parents find the name in the first place? It seems like they should have an idea of what your name means...I have a feeling its a made up variation of Sinead or something along those lines.

I have seen Shinnae, Shinae, Shin'ae, Shinea and other similar names pop up alongside the more popular name Shanae. (I have also seen Shannae, Shanay, Chenaey and various other forms). They're all the same name, with different sets of letters representing the shə-NAY pronunciation.Shanae seems to be a modern coinage, possibly based on Sian / Shana, or Shannon, or Chanel, or anything else with 'shan' as the first syllable.

I suspect that this is a modern coinage too, but I think the most significant part is the -nae ending. Since the 1960s, when Renee/Renae was fairly popular, there have been a number of similar names: Danae, Janae, Shanae, Lanae, all with a plethora of variant spellings. It's true that Shanae could be a phoneticized form of Sinead, and Danae could be a Greek mythological name, but I think it's more likely that parents are creating new names on the pattern of Renee. These names, also like Renee, are more popular as middle names than first names.

You're absolutely right*headslap*... do not operate BtN when tired, Amphelise.Between the trendy Sha- beginning and the trendy -nae ending, it fairly well sums up the past 50 years :D

I've seen Genee (jen-ay or zhen-ay) as a shortened version of Eugenie, and your name could possibly be a further variation of that. Perhaps your parents just personalised the spelling.

You say your dad "tried to look it up." But where did he and your mother find it in the first place? Knowing why they named you that is information that would be very useful in tracking down its origin.

My best guess is that it's a made-up phonetic spelling of Sinead, not necessarily meant to be a variant, but with the same sound.
