Boia as a male name is related to the current english word "boy", meaning young man. The name occurs around north sea (in Frisia, Danmark and Norway) in the forms Boio, Boje, Boj, or Boy (and other spellings). -a was a male ending in germanic languages in the first millenium (until the year 1000)

In Italian "boia" means "hangman" (not a very cool meaning). I don't know if this can have any relation with the English word.
