My Dad's name is Chalmer. I have yet to meet anyone with this name and I can't find it in the databases.

Chalmer is an alteration of the surname Chalmers, which is a Scottish form of the English surname Chambers, which in medieval times originally designated someone who was in charge of the private chambers of a nobleman's estate, or someone who worked in the chambers of a government treasury. The surname is almost always Chalmers, and that is usually also the form of the given name. My own paternal uncle was named Chalmers. However, I have seen Chalmer before; some parents leave off the "s" when turning this into a given name, either deliberately because they don't like a plural-sounding form as a first name, or accidentally through simply mishearing the original name.
