Hippy Name meanings, anyone? "Mook"? "Tempany"? etc...
Hi, gang! Do we have any hippies on board who might know why the following names are considered to be "hippy names", and what they might possibly mean? They can be found at:http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/Andes/5333/names.html (as well as at the Kabalarians website)Ziggy
Vaspera (an alternate spelling of "Vespera" perhaps?)
Lief (an alternate spelling of "Leaf"?)
Tempany
Imogen ("Imagine"?)
Belou
Mook-- Nanaea

LiefI know that 'lief' is the Dutch word for 'sweet' (when describing a person or action).

I know one...That is, Imogen , which actually means 'maiden' I believe, and I think it's French. But I have no idea why it would be a 'hippy name'.

Thanks, Ryder. :) I'm going to assume that "Imogen " is a hippie name because of its similarity to "Imagine".-- Nanaea

Do you know of the actor Joaquin Phoenix ? Well, his alias name is Leaf Phoenix . He was the only child out of his family (River , Rainbow, Summer , Liberty (?) , etc.) without a "hippy name." His parents were hippies with "normal names."I got this information from a biography about River Phoenix .(Did what I just type make any sense?)

Thanks, V! That explains now why the name "Joaquin " appears on the Hippy Names lists. I couldn't figure out the "hippy connection" to that name at all, before. :)-- Nanaea

Another way of interpreting Joaquin as a hippie name: it sounds like "jokin'" :)

Sounds plausible to me! The Joker in a deck of cards is the "hippie card", too. ;)-- Nanaea

I have done some research, and for those who didn't know, because I didn't -- you'd think I'd pay closer attention to those movie advertisements -- Joaquin is pronounced "WAA-keen." From the looks of the name (and the way I pronounced it) I thought it was French or something.

Ziggy and MookieZiggy: Related to zigzag, a psychedelic sensation par excellence. Also don’t forget Ziggy Stardust.Mookie: possible relation to "muck", which the OED defines as cattle dung. And guess what kind of mushrooms grow on muck?

Ziggy only means one thing to me, Ziggy Marley

In my neck a the woods, ZigZag was one of two popular brands of rolling papers (the other being Topps). In fact, Monsieur ZigZag (on the label) was more recognizable to people my age than was William Westmoreland (don't ask, kids).Which is why it was rather amusing some years later when the Texas band Z.Z. Topp said in an interview that they "didn't remember" how they came up with the band's name. Uh, yuh...

YOU smoked "funny" cigarettes, Daividh??? I'll bet you inhaled, too! ;)Have to admit I tried 'em, too, in my high school days. But I honestly never got as satisfying a buzz from them as I did from a glass of fine wine. I was a hippy AND a Long Island Princess. ;)-- Nanaea

Okay, I'll buy into "Ziggy" -- plus there's a cool jewelry shop on Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village called "Ziggy's" that's been there FOREVER (I think).I'm not so sure about "Mookie", though. :)-- Nanaea

It's good to be back. I'm afraid I can't be of too much assistance, but Julia Stiles plays a girl named Imogen in a movie called *Down To You* with Freddie Prinze Jr., it's one of those teen movies that all came out at the same time, and a really bad one at that. But in the movie she's very artsy, designing album covers, and she loves cake.Sarahjeanne

I've never seen that movie, but I gather from what you're both saying that maybe it's one I should avoid. :) I'm in the middle of watching *Billy Elliot * right now on DVD (wasn't able to finish it last night, but probably will tonight). That kid cracks me up. :)-- Nanaea

Am I personally going to have to come to your house and throw that movie away?? Unless it was a gift, then it's okay! LOL It's probably one of those movies that really grows on you and there's no escaping it! Like my favorite movie of all time is Untamed Heart with Rosie Perez, Christian Slater and Marissa Tomai. It doesn't get any more addicting than that!! LOL
I'll forgive you this time, Gia Nadine !! J/K ;)

I actually dont know how I came about that movie. I think it was on sale for like $5. so I bought it. I have alot of kind of teeny booper movies. I feel in love with 10 things I hate about you when that came out. I went and saw it 7 times in the theater. But I think it was because of Heath Ledger. He is a hottie!!! And I love accents. LOL Dont worry Ryan wasent upset about it. I am not sure what my fav movie is. I like A Walk in the Clouds, The Patriot was awesome, I saw The Mummy a few million times. I am just not sure. Though good choice Sarahjeanne , Untamed Heart was really good. I always cry in it. Kind of pathetic I guess. LOLGia Nadine

P.S.
How can you go wrong with any movie that Adam Sandler is in?? With the exception of his last flick, Little Nicky , I have no desire to see that. But is Billy Madison a classic or what? I find myself quoting that movie alot! :)
