Payn
Is anyone aware of the etymology and origins of the medieval English masculine name Payn, diminutives of which are Paynot & Paynet?I am unsure whether it is related to Paine.

Isn't it from Pagan? Probably in the sense of 'someone living in the country' and then the modern meaning came about because out of town, the old religions lingered longer, in the absence of churches etc.I bet it's identical to Paine, and indeed to Payne.
