EINO as a feminine name
Here in Germany, EINO is extremely rare. It seems to be Scanadinavian, possibly Finnish. Now I haven't come accross one single Eino; however I met a girl by that name, whose parents told me, that they had met two more.
Now Eino as a feminine name is not listed in any of my books. – Does anybody have any information as to whether Eino is used as a feminine name in Finland or any other Scandinavian country?

It should be spelled Aino (which is pronounced exactly the same as Eino in German) to match the Finnish spelling. Because it looks and sounds masculine to German native speakers, registrars in Germany may ask the parents to add a clearly feminine second name.Aino is also the name of the female protagonist in Sándor Márai's novel 'Sirály' (German "Die Möwe", I am not aware of an English translation).--elbowin

Thank you! This really helps. Looks like the parents chose a different spelling for whatever reason.

From everything I can find, Eino seems to be a strictly male name. The feminine form is Eini. The parents naming their daughters Eino might be looking at it as a unisex name. Are you sure their names weren't Eini? The name was popularized by a poet named Eino Leino, and his full name was Armas Einar Leopold Lönnbohm. I'm not certain, but it looks like "Eino" came from the name Einar in his case. It seems like Eini and Enni are the official feminine forms of Eino.

Thank you for your quick response!
Yes, I am positive that the name is feminine. I talked to the parents, and they said, they had it from two other persons by that name, and it was definitely Eino for a girl.
In Germany they will allow a name, if you can prove that it has been allowed in this country or is listed in any other country. So it would be interesting to hear a voice right from Finland. Are you?

Sorry, I'm not from Finland. I'm from America. It seems that elbowin had the answer that the name was Aino not Eino. The name is Finnish, and it comes from a mythological epic. Names that sound similar can often get transcribed as the same thing. Glad I could reply to you! And if you have any other questions feel free to ask.
