I've never heard of Asia as a nickname for Joanna.

It's very common in Polish. It is pronounced AH-shah. It is not related to other forms of the name like the ancient Greek Asia or the name of the continent.

Joanna became Joasia and that got shortened to Asia

It's just a standard way to create diminutives in Polish, eg Maria-Marysia, Katarzyna-Kasia, Barbara-Basia
