While I couldn't locate a specific reference source for the meaning of the surname "Garris", I'm going to say that this appears to be a variation of the surname "Garrison" (much as "Harris " is a variation of "Harrison ").Garrison (and most likely Garris) means "son of Gerard (or son of Gerald )".
