The surname Roberts is a Welsh one. When the English conquerors decided that the Welsh should all be equipped with surnames, the result was that many forenames in common usage were converted into surnames by adding an "s" at the end: hence names such as Williams, Jenkins, Evans, Hughes, etc. -- and Roberts.
